BRANDT BRAUER FRICK
Contemporary classical music melts with house and techno.
Three young musicians have joined together for this exciting acoustic techno project. On the one hand the duo Daniel Brandt and Jan Brauer, better known as „Scott“ produce club music with a jazz attitude (EPs on My Best Friend, Fluid Ounce, THE GYM and more).
On the other hand Paul Frick, who has studied classical and modern composition with Friedrich Goldmann at Universität der Künste Berlin. Besides experimental pieces for orchestral instruments he releases house music (EPs on Kalk Pets, THE GYM, 30porumalinha and more).
With prepared piano, vibraphone, drums, various percussions, brass and string instruments, rhodes, bass guitar and analogue synthesizers the trio creates textures that may bring to mind Steve Reich as well as the oldschool loop techno. Experiment meets deepness, complexity meets minimalism. The generation of the sound is mostly acoustic – even the bassdrum. Only a few electronic instruments complete the sound.
Brandt Brauer Frick succeed in a thrilling synthesis of club and concert hall. On both platforms they will present themselves, getting percussive and energetic sounds out of apparently harmless classical instruments.
The trios first EP “Iron Man” has appeared in August 2009. The EPs „Wallah/Button“ (The Gym) and “Bop/Paino Shakur” (Tartelet Records) hit the market in November and December. The full length debut album will follow in February on Tartelet Records. Also on the way: acoustic reworks for Bozeman (Doppelschall) and Emika (Ninja Tune).
DANIEL BRANDT
Daniel Brandt has been involved in music for a long time. After playing drums and piano from an early age in several jazz, rock and pop bands and classical orchestras he focused more and more on electronic music. He played drums in the german drum & bass band “Die Spielwiese” from 2002 until 2006.
Afterwards Daniel started two new live and production projects: ”The Free Electric Band” focused on minimal techno and electro with a stunning live-dance-show and “Scott” a duet with his friend Jan Brauer. Together they play and produce house and jazzy techno with releases on My Best Friend ltd. (Traum Schallplatten), Fluid Ounce and their own label Doppelschall.
Daniel has also taken part in the Red Bull Music Academy 2006 in Melbourne, where he worked together with several internation musicians like Dj Zinc, The Mizell Brothers, Aloe Blacc and many others. As a result of the Academy many collaborations with other participants were started. One of the collaborations resulted in the band “Haphazard” who will soon start to release a series of 7? records on London’s Burnt Progress Label.
He has joined forces with Paul Frick (Kalk Pets) and Jan Brauer from Scott to start a new project focused on a mixture between modern classical and techno music at the end of 2008. The trio called “Brandt Brauer Frick” released their debut EP on Tartelet Records from Copenhagen in early 2009.
Besides that Daniel is deejaying for more than 6 years all around the world having played at many clubs such as Bar 25 (Berlin), Honkytonks (Melbourne), The Butter Factory (Singapore), Salmon & Compass (London), Propaganda (Moscow) and Watergate (Berlin), just to name a few.
His sound is a mixture between Old School House, Techno and Minimal House and always reflect his experiences as a live musician.
DOLLKRAUT
From his immersion into the electronic music world about fourteen years ago, Pascal Pinkert, also known as Dollkraut, has managed to keep his finger directly on the pulse of the house/techno community.
Growing up in the eastern part of Holland, Dollkraut was imbedded with a passion for high calibur music, being exposed to classic soul, jazz and funk.
After he got his first own computer, Dollkraut’s creative output blossomed into a hybrid of jazz, soul, minimal, techno, and classic house sounds. Shortly after that he got his first worldwide release called ‘Cheveux Noir’ on Music People Records which was an instant hit with support from major dj’s all over the globe.
Being on the circuit over the last few years means that Dollkraut has played at some of the coolest nights and venues all over the country including parties like Awakenings and places like Paradiso, Melkweg in Amsterdam.
Dollkraut’s deep and diverse musical interest and knowledge is a result of his realisation that music is the highest expression of the human soul.
PAUL FRICK
Paul Frick was born in Berlin. He started to play the piano at the age of seven and took composition classes since the age of twelve. From 2000 to 2008 he studied composition with Friedrich Goldmann at Universität der Künste Berlin. Paul Frick has written and performed music in various contexts and styles: pieces for orchestra, chamber music (including one short opera), theatre music, music for radio plays (Deutschlandradio Kultur), experimental improvisation.
On his way to house music, he played guitar in a heavy metal band, tried to be a rapper, played the keys in jazz, r’n'b, hiphop and salsa bands and produced two hiphop albums. Lately his EPs on Kalk Pets, THE GYM, Klamauk and 30porumalinha + RMXs on MBF, Mothership and Spontan have gained him attention for achieving interesting musical textures and high dancefloor functionality at the same time.
PIERRE CHEVALLIER
Growing up in the bavarian province, Pierre experienced the early days of Munich‘s electronic music scene. He started djing in 1998 and performed his first hardware-liveset at Dj Hell‘s Club „Villa“ at the age of 18.
In 2003 Pierre moved to Cologne and he absorbed almost everything that was happening to the house & techno scene during that time. Since then he‘s deeply rooted in Cologne‘s clubculture and is involved in promoting events like „One Night…“.
He started producing music two years ago and his first creative output „Electronic Cruising“ was released on the 10th anniversary compilation of the correspondent party series (Ede Cologne). His music is supposed to touch emotionally and to move the head and the body as well.Together with Daniel Brandt, Pierre launched the project Brandt & Chevallier and released the „UH!“ ep on the spanish-german imprint Splendid Lo-Fi.
For his dj-sets he`s doin individual edits of the choosen tracks. Sometimes there‘s a mix of five elements of different edits to become a new Track and frontiers between a dj- and a liveset are disappearing.
SCOTT
Scott was founded in the summer of 2006 by Jan Brauer and Daniel Brandt with the aim to play soulful minimal music with real instruments. For recording their music Jan and Daniel use real drums, a Fender Rhodes and some analogue synthesizers. Everything they can find which makes a rhythmic noise is turned into percussive patterns. Sometimes „Scott“ get joined by different singers and guest-musicians.
Watch out for their live-performances with electronic drums, keyboards and some more gear. They also get occasional visual-support by the visual artist Julian Schleef with his special Scott live video show.
In 2008 the duet toured intensively playing about 30 gigs in different countries including: Sonar Festival (Barcelona), Zouk (Singapore), Uebel & Gefaehrlich (Hamburg), Loop (Tokyo), NT Areal (Basel), Watergate (Berlin), Nachtdigital Festival (Olganitz), Triangle (Osaka), Fusion Festival (Lärz), MIGZ Festival (Moscow), Gewoelbe (Cologne), Kassablanca (Jena), c/o Pop Festival (Cologne), BeCool (Barcelona), Glamset (Salerno), Luxor (Arnheim) and many more.
VAKULA
Vakula was born in a small town Konotop in the times of the Soviet Union. His musical background is all about his grandfather who was a unique Banduras (native ukrainian music instrument) player.
After moving to Moscow Vakula started to combine hard work and visiting night clubs. At that time he came to intension to share his music with the people. That’s when he decided to spent time learning to work with turntables. Vakula’s dj debut was in of the most interesting places – Propagandaclub in Moscow a true Mekka of House Music in Russia.
In the following year he released a couple of records including “Hohol” with a remix by Lerosa which was released on UK label Uzuri and also “Night in Konotop City” on Quintessentials all following critical acclaim. Though belonging to the genre of house music the sound was really unexpected & unique.
He came up with his “Sun Down” Ep on Doppelschall Records in 2009. With 3 tracks loaded with uncompromising deepness. The EP brings to mind Moodymann aswell as Soulphiction or Lawrence. You can hear a strong Detroit influence and also the dust of Moscows Roads. With a very jazzy vibe this EP can get the crowd rocking with no doubt.
